?Introducción

Christian Norberg Schulz, en su libro, Existencia, Espacio y Arquitectura, aborda el tema del espacio, como “dimensión de existencia humana”, para sobre esta base, desarrollar el concepto de espacio arquitectónico, como “una concreción de esquemas o imágenes ambientales”
En este informe escrito, se tocan los temas de la conceptualización del espacio y el concepto de espacioexistencial, dentro de la teoría de la arquitectura.
En el desarrollo, se siguió el mismo orden del libro, primero, un acercamiento a diferentes conceptualizaciones de “espacio”, posteriormente, se profundiza el concepto de espacio dentro de la teoría arquitectónica y la relación entre espacio arquitectónico y espacio existencial, para llegar al tema esencial del trabajo, el concepto de espacioexistencial a través de la descripción de sus elementos, niveles e interacciones.

Chisrtian Norberg Schulz distingue siete conceptos de espacio, en orden creciente de abstracción:
– El espacio Pragmático, de acción física, el espacio en el que el hombre actúa, el concepto que integra al hombre con su ambiente orgánico.
– El espacio Perceptivo, deorientación inmediata, es el espacio que el hombre percibe, es esencial para su identidad como persona.
– El espacio Existencial, que forma para el hombre la imagen estable del ambiente que le rodea, le hace pertenecer a una totalidad social y cultural.
– El espacio Cognoscitivo del mundo físico, es un concepto que implica pensar acerca del espacio.
– El espacio expresivo o artístico, es elespacio creado por el hombre para expresar su imagen del mundo. El espacio arquitectónico es un espacio expresivo, y como todo espacio expresivo, su creación es tarea de personas especializadas, constructores, arquitectos y planificadores.
– El espacio estético, es la construcción abstracta que sistematiza las propiedades de los posibles espacios expresivos. El espacio estético es estudiado porteóricos en arquitectura y filósofos.
– El espacio Lógico, es el espacio abstracto de las relaciones lógicas, que ofrece el instrumento para describir los otros espacios.

El concepto de espacio en la teoría arquitectónica

El tema del espacio, es un tema central en la teoría de la arquitectura, e históricamente, según Segfid Giedion, a quien Norberg Schulz cita, hubo tres diferentes concepcionesdel espacio, en el primer concepto, se ve al espacio arquitectónico, como “resultado de la relación e interacción de los volúmenes”, o sea, el espacio exterior a los volúmenes, configurado por estos; la segunda concepción, se refiere “al espacio interior ahuecado”, la tercera, se relaciona con “la influencia recíproca de los espacios del interior y del exterior”.
Giedion avanza en la direccióndel “espacio existencial” de Norberg Schulz: “El proceso por el cual una imagen espacial puede ser transpuesta a la esfera emocional es expresado por el concepto espacial. Proporciona información acerca de la relación entre el hombre y lo que lo rodea. Es la expresión espiritual de la realidad que se halla frente a él. El mundo situado ante él es modificado por su presencia, le obliga a proyectargráficamente su propia posición si desea relacionarse con él.”
Norgberg Schulz critica la falta de precisión filosófica de la idea de Geidion, diciendo que ” su aproximación es aún demasiado ingenuamente realista”, aunque reconoce que entre otros estudios coetáneos sobre el tema, es la que más se acerca a su visión.
Otros estudios del espacio, se basan en el espacio euclideano, o sea, unageometrización de las relaciones espaciales, excluyendo al ser humano o incluyéndolo, en base a la sicología de la percepción, estudiando las impresiones, sensaciones y efectos que el espacio y la arquitectura producen en el hombre. Norberg Schulz dice que “en ambos casos el espacio, como dimensión existencial y como relación entre el hombre y el ambiente que lo rodea ha sido olvidado.”
