Organización Mundial de la Salud
La Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS), es el organismo de la Organización de las Naciones Unidas (ONU) especializado en gestionar políticas de prevención,promoción e intervención en salud a nivel mundial. Organizada por iniciativa del Consejo Económico y Social de la ONU que impulsó la redacción de los primeros estatutos de la OMS. La primera reunión de laOMS tuvo lugar en Ginebra, en 1948.
Los principales cometidos de la Asamblea Mundial de la Salud son aprobar el programa y el presupuesto de la OMS para el siguiente bienio y decidir las principalescuestiones relativas a las políticas sanitarias. Tal y como establece su Constitución, el objetivo de la OMS es que todos los pueblos de la tierra puedan gozar del grado máximo de salud que se puedalograr. La Constitución de la OMS define la salud como «un estado de completo bienestar físico, mental y social», y no solamente como la ausencia de afecciones o enfermedades.
Los 193 Estados Miembrosde la OMS gobiernan la Organización por medio de la Asamblea Mundial de la Salud. La Asamblea está compuesta por representantes de todos los Estados Miembros de la OMS.
Estructura
Los Estadosmiembros de la OMS designan sus delegaciones a la Asamblea Mundial de la Salud, la cual se reúne generalmente en mayo de cada año, y tiene la capacidad de definir las políticas financieras de laorganización, y revisa y aprueba el presupuesto por programas. La Asamblea elige a 34 miembros que se califican como técnicos en el campo de la salud para un mandato de tres años y los cuales forman elConsejo Ejecutivo. Las funciones principales del Consejo son las de hacer efectivas las decisiones y las políticas de la Asamblea, aconsejarla y facilitar su trabajo.
