A principios del siglo XIX, elvirreinato del Perú, se ha denominado la posesión más importante de la Corona española[4] al tratarse de una de sus más importantes fuentes de riqueza. El virreinato peruanodurante el proceso de independencia hispanoamericana se convirtió en el último bastión y centro contrarevolucionario en América del Sur, obligando a José de San Martín a abandonarsu empresa emancipadora tras establecer la República del Perú, hasta que bajo la división partidista, y sin auxilios de España, el virreinato sucumbió finalmente en lascampañas decisivas de Simón Bolívar.

En lo militar el virreinato del Perú financió y apoyó militarmente, por medio del real situado y el envio de soldados y provisiones desde elPerú, las campañas contra los mapuches en la Guerra de Arauco que se extendió por todo el período colonial, solamente en el año 1662 fueron enviados 950 soldados y 300.000
